Beach BI 31 extends as a 300 m wide barrier for 2.4 km from the western 150 m wide headland to the mouth of 600 ha Cloudy Bay Lagoon, where it recurves 700 m into the bay. It is also exposed to moderately high waves which combine with fine beach sand to maintain a 300-400 m wide double bar surf zone. The inner bar usually has several well developed rips, with more widely spaced rips along the outer bar. Like the eastern beach this beach is backed by a 200 m wide band of well developed low grassy foredunes then inner parabolic dunes extending up to 500 m inland. At the 50 m wide inlet, the tidal channel and shoals extend 300-500 m into the bay along the western rocky shoreline. The shoals can produce a long right-hand break running in towards the beach called Lagoons (Fig. 4.104).
Beach Length: 2.4km
General Hazard Rating: 6/10
