Helliwells Point protrudes 500 m into the channel and separates the Periwinkle bays. Periwinkle Bay lies to the south and is a 1.5 km wide east-facing bay bordered to the south by Birchs Point. Woodbridge is located in the centre of the bay to the lee of a small central headland. Beach T 488 is a 100 m long strip of high tide sand and 150 m wide sand flats located in the northern half of the bay. It faces southeast down the bay receiving only low wind waves. It is backed by three houses then the highway, with a few dinghies usually pulled up on the beach.
