Beach T 820 commences at the end of the rocks where the Violet Rivulet crosses the shore and tends due north for 1 km to the 100 m wide mouth of the Pieman River. The wide low gradient sandy beach is crossed by another central creek and backed by low heathland. It faces due west and receives waves averaging over 2 m, which break across a low gradient 500 m wide surf zone, with a dissipative outer bar that links the side of the bay. There is usually a well developed transverse bar and rip inner bar cut by a southern boundary rip, a central beach rip, and the deep river channel to the north which runs along the northern Pieman Head. The dark tannin water from the river usually stains the waters of the bay (Fig. 4.165). There is vehicle access to the river mouth and a collection of about 20 fishing shacks and two small jetties located 1 km inside the mouth.
