Fossil Bluff is a 50 m high coastal bluff composed of Tertiary marine sediments that are rich in fossils. It is located 3 km south of the prominent Table Cape. The 5.5 ha Fossil Bluff Coastal Reserve includes the bluff and adjoining Fossil Beach (T 1060). The 200 m long beach extends northwest of the bluff to the beginning of the steep basalt slopes that continue north to Table Cape. The beach is exposed to easterly waves, which average about 1 m and usually maintain a series of well developed gravel and sand cusps along the low gradient high tide beach (Fig. 4.229). The beach grades into a sandy low tide bar bordered by converging intertidal rock flats. While the beach is bordered by steep bluffs, it is backed by a low foredune, 100 m wide grassy reserve, then a subdivision, with a beach car park at the end of the houses.
