The Tasman River is the first section of coast accessible by car north of Trial Bay. At the mouth of the steep, deeply incised small river is beach T 800. The gravely river bed drains out amongst rocks at the southern end of the beach, which curves for 300 m to the north and is bordered by low irregular rock platforms together with a central outcrop of rocks. Waves averaging 3 m break over an outer bar and boundary reefs converging on the beach, with a strong permanent rip flowing out towards the northern end of the beach. The steep yellow beach is bare of vegetation and grades into an unstable foredune and partly exposed white Pleistocene dunes, which have climbed part way up the backing slopes.
