Back and Childrens Beaches used to be part of a continuous strip of sand along the southern shores of San Remo. However in response to shoreline erosion, seawalls have been built between the two beaches and the sand replaced by rock. Back Beach is 500 m long and faces south-west. A foreshore reserve and low vegetated dune back the beach with the seawall at the western end. Childrens Beach is also 500 m long and faces west into The Narrows, that separate San Remo from Phillip Island. A caravan park backs the beach. The seawall runs along the entire length of the beach and separates it from Back Beach. As a result, the beach is very narrow and in parts is completely awash at high tide. Both these beaches receive low waves that produce a steep beach face, fronted by extensive tidal shoals that may be exposed at low tide. However, at high tide they are covered and relatively deep water lies off the beach. In addition, Childrens Beach is also influenced by the strong tidal currents that flow through The Narrows.
