The northern end of Wilsons Promontory is dominated by 475 m high Mount Singapore. At its foot are three relatively protected north facing beaches: Shelter Cove West and East and Biddies Cove. They lie along the southern edge of the 3 km wide Franklin Channel; the main tidal inlet for Corner Inlet. As a result, strong tidal currents flow off the beaches. The beaches can only be reached by boat.
Each beach consists of a steep, reflective high tide beach, fronted by intertidal sand flats that are exposed at low tide. The flats reach a width of 200 m in the middle of the coves, but are narrow off the boundary points. Strong tidal currents run just off the flats.
