Salmon Bay beach (RI 28) is the longest beach on the south coast. It faces southwest and curves for 1.1 km between calcarenite bluffs. It consists of a moderately steep white sand reflective beach fringed with a 30 m strip of sandy seafloor, with seagrass meadows and patchy reef extending well into the bay, thereby reducing waves at the shore to less than 1 m. The western 100 m are fronted by a 50-100 m wide platform. Well vegetated foredune backs the beach and the island road runs along the rear providing good access to this popular swimming beach.
