Thomas Bay is located in lee of the Chile Head beachrock reef and its subaqueous extension. A small creek flows out in lee of the north side of the head, followed by the 9.2 km long curving beach. It faces north behind the head, curving round to face west and finally south at its northern end where it terminates at a reef-controlled inflection in the shoreline. Lombadina community is located 1 km behind the beach (K 85), 4 km east of Chile Head, with 4WD access to the beach across the intervening dunes. The beach consists of a relatively steep high tide beach, with 1-2 km wide sand flats filling much of the bay out to the beachrock reefs. A 0.5-1 km wide active dune field backs the beach, with vegetated dunes dominating only the inner 20 m high transgressive ridge.
