At Cape Bertholet the shoreline turns and trends easterly into a 14 km long, very low energy section of coast that terminates in the extensive tidal flats of Carnot Bay. Between the cape and the bay are two low barrier islands, backed by extensive mangroves, bordered by three tidal creeks and fronted by 1-2 km wide tidal sand flats. The first beach (K 39) commences 2 km east of Cape Bertholet and trends north-northeast for 7.2 km as part of a low crenulate barrier island, of variable width, backed by mangrove forests to either end, together with 3 km wide salt flats in the centre.
