Whitmore Island (WA 1429) is a 500 m long sand island located in the centre of the 1 km wide river mouth and can only be accessed by boat. It is fronted by 2 km wide ridged sand flats and backed by 1 km wide series of foredune ridges and spits, set in amongst mangroves. Other temporary sand islands and spits form off and to either side of the island/river mouth, depending on the nature of recent flood events.
