Beach WA 1042 extends for 600 m south of the 10 m high calcarenite bluffs that mark the southern end of Desperate Bay. The beach is an irregular, narrow high tide strip of sand wedged in between the backing bluffs. The bluffs alternate between vegetated and eroding, while shallow reefs and seagrass meadows extends several kilometres seaward. Behind the bluffs are the scattered shacks of Coolimba, set in amongst the vegetated deflation hollow of a longwalled parabolic.
