Beach WA 981 commences on the northern side of Middle Head and gently curves to the north then northwest for 3.5 km to the first calcarenite rocks of Pumpkin Hollow. The beach and all the northern bay becomes increasingly protected by shallow inner reefs and seagrass meadows, resulting in low waves at the shore and seagrass debris littering the beach. It is backed by a large southern and smaller northern parabolic dune, together with vegetated transgressive dunes. It is accessible via 4 WD tracks from either end. Pumpkin Hollow consists of two sets of adjoining bluff-controlled beaches. Beaches WA 982-984 occupy a 600 m long section of the shore. An elongate finger of calcarenite forms the boundary between the Middle Head beach and beach WA 982.
Beach Length: 3.5km
General Hazard Rating: 3/10
