Beach WA 1117 commences at the northern end of beach WA 1116, where the shoreline turns and trends northwest, while the backing cliffline continues to the north-northwest, forming an escarpment that becomes the eastern shore of Hutt Lagoon 3 km to the north. The beach extends for 3 km to the river mouth. The continuous sandy beach is exposed to waves averaging 1.5 m along the central-southern section, which decrease slightly towards the river mouth. The higher waves maintain a 50 m wide bar cut by rips every few hundred metres. It becomes a more continuous bar as the sediment coarsens and the beach steepens to the north. The entire beach faces more into the southerly winds and is backed by active parabolics, which climb the backing slopes to elevations of 60 m and terminate on the slopes and at the Hutt River channel. The river drains an area of heavily weathered and dissected sandstones, whose eroded material forms the steep coarse quartz-rich beach. The river occasionally breakout in winter and induces additional instability in the beach and backing foredunes. A short track off the Port Gregory road leads to the northern side of the river mouth.
