Beaches WA 1855 and 1856 occupy the easternmost of the active barrier islands along this section of coast. Beach WA 1855 is 3.8 km long and extends east from a small tidal creek to the mouth of the next creek, the mangrove-lined creek linking to one of the western distributaries of the Sherlock River. The beach is fronted by deeper sand flats, which permit low waves to reach the shore at high tide. It is backed by semi-stable foredunes extending 100-200 m inland, then a 2.5 km wide complex of older barriers. Beach WA 1856 curves into the eastern creek mouth for 1.2 km and faces north across the tidal channel and shoals that extend 2 km into the bay. A vehicle track follows the Sherlock River and then crosses 3.5 km of sand flats to reach the eastern side of the creek, directly opposite the eastern end of beach WA 1856.
Beach Length: 1.2km
