Beach WA 1722 lies at the western end of a 2 km long north-facing, mangrove-lined barrier island, with beach WA 1723 occupying a 300 m long gap in the mangroves towards the eastern end of the island. The island is one of a series of discontinuous spits that extend for up to 7 km east of the river mouth. It is backed by a 3.5 km wide series of inner barrier island-spits, mangroves and salt flats, that form the delta plain. Beach WA 1724 occupies the eastern 400 m of the next 1 km long convex-shaped barrier island-spit. Mangroves are scattered off the shore, with tidal flats extending 1.5 km seaward.
