Beach NT 572 extends for 13.6 km to the east, as a slightly crenulate-curving beach that initially faces north, slowly swinging round to face northwest, and finally west against the low eastern boundary point. The entire beach is backed by a 200-500 m wide low barrier system, containing moderately active low dunes, with a double Holocene barrier behind the first 5 km of beach, the barriers separated by a small meandering tidal creek that drains the 10 000 ha Iliwan Swamp. The swamp is located behind the central section of the beach, with two additional swamps 2500 ha in area behind the western and eastern ends of the beach. The beach is exposed to waves that average about 1 m in the west, decreasing in height to the east in lee of Relief Point. In the west the waves maintain a continuous 100 m wide low tide bar, while, beginning in the centre of the beach, 500-600 m wide ridge sand flats front the beach. In the sheltered west-facing eastern corner of the beach is a temporary fishing camp.
