Beach NT 593 occupies the first 900 m north of the river mouth, and is a narrow strip of high tide sand backed by mangroves and fronted by 300-500 m wide tidal shoals, with the deep tidal channel forming the southern boundary. The beach and 4 km of mangrove-fringed shoreline to the north are the outermost deposits in a 2 km wide plain consisting of a series of several beach ridge-cheniers, each separated by salt flats. These are in turn backed by 500 m wide salt flats and then a series of Pleistocene beach ridges. Together with a similar, though smaller, series on the south side of the river they cover an area of 2000 ha and represent to the order of 50 million cubic metres of sediment that have infilled the western 3-4 km of this low energy bay during the past 6000 m years. To achieve this sediment, to the order of 10 000 m3 a year would need to be delivered to this end of the bay. There is no development in and no vehicle access to the bay region.
Beach Length: 0.9km
