Beach NT 440 lies across the mouth of a drowned 1.2 km wide valley located between two 10 m highs in the coastal plain. The valley has been infilled by up to 1.6 km of progradation in the form of three series of beach ridge-cheniers, separated by swamps and mangroves totalling 150 ha in area, with a mangrove-lined creek draining the system, and forming the southern boundary of the 1.5 km long beach. Sand flats extend 600 m off the beach.
