Numbulwar Beach NT 1433 commences immediately south of the small boundary creek and curves round in a convex shape for 5.2 km, facing initially southeast and finally south into the funnel-shaped 500 m wide mouth of the Rose River. The small Wungumana Creek flows along behind the northern 2 km of beach before crossing at a slight inflection in the shore. Pulses of sand moving southward along the beach and into the river mouth produce a series of crenulations in the shoreline. The Numbulwar community is located behind the centre of the beach. The community has a fluctuating population of up to several hundred people and has an administrative centre, store and school. A road runs from the community to the barge landing toward the western end of the beach, with the landing ground 1 km further west. Numbulwar beach is initially bordered by the deep Rose River channel along the western 1 km. The channel then swings to the northeast and moves 100-500 m offshore, with sand flats to either side, the outer flats extending 3 km offshore. Numbulwar is the largest community in the southwest section of the gulf, with the nearest comparable communities located 250 km to the north at Nhulunbuy-Yirrkala, 90 km to the east at Alyangula on Groote Eylandt, and 200 km to the southeast at Borroloola.
