Brannigan Creek is located 20 km north of Karumba with most of the shoreline in between consisting of mangrove-lined tidal flats. Beach Q 31, 5 km south of the creek mouth, represents the first stretch of sand north of Karumba. The 800 m long beach faces west and consists of a low generally bare beach ridge, prone to overwashing, that has developed 100-300 m off the old trend of the shore, and represents the ongoing progradation of this section of coast. It is fronted by 50 m wide ridged sand flats, while it is separated from the older shore by mangrove-covered intertidal flats. Tidal creeks border either end of the beach.
