Karumba Beach (Q 30) is one of the few publicly accessible beaches on the gulf and probably the most popular and most frequented. The beach itself begins inside the eastern side of the river mouth running for 1 km up to the point, where it turns and trends northeast for 2 km (Fig. 6.7), gradually running in behind dense mangroves that then continue for another 9 km. The steep, shell-rich beach also has shell-rich beachrock exposed along this section. The western river mouth section of the beach has tidal sand flats, and the Elbow Bank, that extends 6 km offshore. To the east these give way to 1 km wide mud flats. The Karumba Point settlement backs the western section of the beach. It includes a beachfront tavern and beer garden, which provide a view of sunsets over the gulf, a caravan park, boat ramp and a few shops. The airport parallels the central-eastern section of the beach. The main town and port of Karumba is located 3 km to the south on the banks of the Norman River (Fig. 6.8).
