Beach Q 41 is a very low energy, west-facing, low gradient, 2.7 km long, high tide beach. It commences on the north side of the mangroves that extend 10 km north from the Gilbert River and terminates at the mangrove-lined mouth of the Staaten River. It is fronted by mud flats extending several hundred metres into the gulf, with mangroves scattered along the intertidal zone. The beach and backing 1-2 km of salt flats are a fauna reserve, with the salt flats extending another 3 km east to Pleistocene beach ridges.
