Portland Roads beach (Q 403) is a 100 m long strip of moderately steep high tide sand, wedged in between mangroves to the west and a granite point rising to 50 m to the east. The low energy beach faces northwest and is fronted by a veneer of sand over reef flats that extend 200 m off the beach, with the boats anchored beyond the reef. The beach is usually littered with small dinghies from the boats, and is also used for launching small boats. It is backed by a shady coconut grove, then the road. The few houses occupy the backing slopes.
