The Oaks is one of the few beaches with a sandy surf zone along this rocky section of coast. The beach lies in a 250 m wide opening in the rocks. It is backed by a small, vegetated dune, then 30 m high, vegetated bluffs and the main road. A foot track enters the middle of the beach. The beach faces south and receives waves averaging 1.6 m, which produce a 200 m wide surf zone dominated by two permanent rips, both against the rocks. In addition, reefs parallel the rocks at each end of the beach.
