Beach Q 56 commences on the northern side of the river mouth where a series of south-migrating recurved spits episodically extend south and connect to beach Q 55, before they are eroded by floods (Fig. 6.11). The beach initially trends northeast then more northerly for 17 km to the mouth of the Mitchell River, where it also recurves into the protruding river mouth. The beach is backed by a series of beach-foredune ridges, which widen from 200 m in the centre to 500 m in the south and 1.5 km in the north, then extensive salt flats and inner older ridge systems. It is fronted by a low tide bar cut by northward-trending rips every 200-300 m.
Beach Length: 17km
