On the northern side of the Pennefather River the shoreline trends straight for 24 km to Janie Creek, then gradually curves round to the east for another 13 km to Cullen Point, the southern entrance to Port Musgrave. Beach Q 144 commences at the Pennefather River mouth as a sandy spit which is deflected by the river mouth shoals for 500 m to the southwest. It then trends straight to Janie Creek where it also terminates in a slightly curving sand spit. In between is a 23.6 km long beach, for most of its length facing the west-northwest and backed by a 200-500 m wide foredune system up to 23 m high, then a 1 km wide interbarrier depression which grades from a freshwater swamp in the south to salt flats then mangroves in the north, all of which are backed by a 1-2 km wide, 10-20 m high Pleistocene barrier. The beach system is well exposed and dominated by a highly rhythmic shoreline with transverse bars and rips spaced about every 200 m, resulting in up to 100 rips along the beach. Flinders Camp is located in the foredunes toward the southern end of the beach and is accessible by 4WD.
