Beach Q 5 is the longest beach in the area, and extends for 20.2 km between Tully and Massacre inlets. A vehicle track reaches this beach and runs along behind to a landing ground located in lee of an inflection in the beach, that marks the beginning of the large Massacre Inlet. The western section of beach is fronted by ridged sand flats, while east of the inflection wider tidal sand flats extend 2-4 km off the beach and inlet. The western 12 km of beach are backed by active and stable dune transgression, then 1-2 km wide beach-foredune ridges and more irregular salt flats. To the east the ridges widen to 3-4 km on the western side of the inlet, as a series of up to 30 splaying recurved spits, which onlap and wrap around abandoned inlet channels. The 300 m wide inlet is bordered by a wide low gradient shoreline, with salt flats reaching the coast where they grade into the wide sand to mud flats.
