Beach Q 136 forms the base of the spit. It commences at Landfall Point, a sandy point tied to laterite reefs and curving to the north, then east for 6 km. It is exposed to southerly waves which maintain a series of migratory sand ridges, which narrow to the east in lee of offshore laterite reefs. The spit is narrow in the west where it is backed by a 4 km wide Crawford Creek mangrove forest, and widens to the east as the older recurved spit splays northward into the former channel.
