Picnic Beach (WA 144) commences at the small tombolo adjacent to Wylie Head and trends west for 4.4 km to the eastern groyne and breakwater of Brandy Creek boat harbour. There is a slight bulge in the centre produced by wave refraction around Low Rock, located 2 km south of the beach. The beach receives waves averaging 1.5 m in the east decreasing slowly to the west. The waves maintain a 70 m wide surf zone with rips spaced every few hundred metres all the way to Brandy Creek, with permanent rips against the tombolo rocks and the breakwater just east of the boat harbour. The beach is backed by vegetated dunes, with an area of active dunes 1-2 km inland. The Wylie Head road runs along the back of the beach with access at either end.
Brandy Creek boat harbour was constructed during the 1990’s and straddles the original Brandy Creek mouth. The small boat harbour has been dredged with converging breakwaters constructed either side of the mouth as well as groynes inside the harbour to stabilise the shore and miminise sand transport into the harbour (Fig. 4.38). As a result of the construction there are two sandy beaches (WA 145 & 146) just inside the harbour entrance. Beach
