West-Second Beach (WA 153) extends from the steep, bare western side of Wireless Hill for 1.2 km to a 30 m high granite Chapmans Point. The beach is exposed to waves averaging over 1.5 m, which break across a discontinuous shore-parallel beachrock reef, lying up to 80m offshore, and fronting a central sandy foreland, that separates West from Second beach. The reefs provides some excellent surf with the water returning out via four strong permanent reef-controlled rips (Fig. 4.41) that drain the both ends of the beach. There are three blufftop car parks above the beaches and two sets of steps leading down to the beach. While a popular beach for fishing and surfing it is very hazardous for swimming owing to the rocks and rips. Up until the 1980’s active clifftop dunes and deflection surfaces covered the 30 m high calcarenite bluffs behind the beach. These have since been covered by residential development.
Beach Length: 1.2km
General Hazard Rating: 8/10
