Downes Island is a 3 km long calcarenite barrier island, with two sandy beaches occupying part of its northern shore and with no vehicle access The 0.5-1 km wide island is backed by 6 km of inner barriers encased in mangroves and inner salt flats. Beach WA 1892 is located along the western shore of the island and faces west towards Weerdee Island and Oyster Inlet. The beach is 200 m long with a small calcarenite outcrop at the southern end, and a low narrow mangrove-fringed point at the northern end. Tidal flats extend 500 m off the beach and into the inlet. Beach WA 1893 commences 500 m to the east and occupies 1.4 km of the northern shore of the island. It is a relatively straight, north-facing high tide sandy beach fronted by 300 m wide intertidal rock flats which narrow to the east. It is backed by a moderately active foredune up to 100 m wide then the vegetated core of the island.
