Beach WA 265 occupies the lee of the rocks and reefs to the west of the inlet. The 600 m long south-facing beach is exposed to high waves, which break across the reefs and inshore rocks. The water returns seaward as a strong permanent rip flowing through a gap in the reefs. It is backed by a dune-draped 40 m high bedrock scarp, with a 4WD track running along the crest. These are two accessible but very hazardous beaches for swimming. Use extreme care if entering the water and stay well clear of the strong rips. Whalebone Beach is part of a series of high energy beaches that extend for 5 km west of Hammersley Inlet. All face south into the high southerly waves and are dominated by a 200 m wide energetic, rip-dominated surf zone, together with numerous outcrops of rocks and reef, resulting in a very hazardous section of coast. There is 4WD access to the top of the 30-50 m high bluffs that runs along behind the beaches, with steep tracks down to the beaches.
Beach Length: 0.6km
