Beach WA 228 commences hard against the sloping gneiss of Powell Point and curves slightly to the southwest for 6.7 km to a reef-tied tombolo that separates it from beach WA 229. The beach is initially exposed to waves averaging 1.5 m, which maintain a rip dominated 80 m wide surf zone (Fig. 4.61). This continues for 5 km before inshore reefs lower waves resulting in a low tide terrace, then reflective conditions dominating the western 1.5 km. The beach is backed by a foredune which matches the beach types, being scarped and dominated by small blowouts rising to 25 m height in the east, while becoming increasing stable, lower and well vegetated to the west. There is a car park and viewing area on Powell Point overlooking the eastern corner of the beach, and a track from the road across the foredunes to the beach 5 km west of the point. The beach is hazardous for swimming, with a permanent rip right below the point car park. There are some rock pools on Powell Point and close inshore against the point providing calmer places to swim. A lifebuoy is located at the car park.
Beach Length: 6.7km
