WA 227 is a 50 m long pocket of sand located 200 m east of the boat launching area. It is separated from the main beach by Tide Gauge Rock, a low gneiss rock and reef. Dune capped Powell Point backs the beach, with the road running out to a car park and lookout on the point. At Powell Point the shoreline turns and sweeps to the southwest for 13 km to Mason Bay. Between the two are nine beaches ranging from exposed to very protected. The gravel Southern Ocean Road runs along behind the backing dunes and together with the Mason Bay Road provides reasonable access to all the beaches. The first three beaches (WA 228-230) occupy the first 10 km of shore.
