Beach WA 217 commences on the western side of the river mouth and trends to the west for 2.8 km, terminating at a low bedrock reef. Once past the river mouth the reef ceases and high waves averaging over 1.5 m reach the shore. These maintain a 200 m wide surf zone usually cut by strong rips every 400-500 m, including a permanent rip against the western reef. The beach is backed by partly stable foredunes and three blowouts extending up to 500 m inland, then by vegetated dunes up to 1 km inland. A rough track winds through the dune to reach the western end of the beach. Lake Shaster is a shallow 800 ha lake located in lee of beaches WA 218 and 219, with a 1 km wide dune system separating the lake from the beaches. The surrounding reserve, which extends along the coast is named after the lake. The lake is the largest in a series of shallow lakes and wetlands that occupy the backbarrier depression between Munginlup Beach and Emu Hill, 20 km to the west.
