McGowan Island lies 15 km north of Kalumburu. It is a low small rock outcrop connected to the mainland by a 200 m long shallow reef. The reef connects to a low sandstone headland, with 250 m long beach K 1025 bordered by this headland in the south and a mangrove-fronted creek mouth to the north. The beach is backed by 100 m wide overwash flats, and fronted by a mixture of sand and rock flats.
