Middle Beach (LH 2) is located 1 km to the south. It is a 300 m long, narrow northeast-facing strip of high tide sand lying at the base of steep 30 m high calcarenite slopes. It requires a little effort to reach via the Anderson Road, then a walk across a paddock and down the steep slope to the beach. A small picnic and barbeque area with excellent views is located half way down the slope and a forest of Kentia palms frame the southern slopes. The beach is narrow and steep and contains a lot of coarse coral rubble as well as sand. Calcarenite also outcrops along the beach to the north, where it terminates at calcarenite bluffs fronted by 60 m wide rock flats. The orientation of the beach and Clear Place Point, which extends 500 m out to sea at the south end, ensures waves are usually low, averaging less than 0.5 m. Under these conditions the waves break slowly over the reefs and lap against the shore, providing relatively quiet conditions for swimming and snorkelling (Fig. 4.443).
