Margaret River Car Park Beach (WA 659) is located below the Margaret River blufftop car park. It is a narrow beach which surfers walk across to enter the channel to paddle out to the main break.The beach curves around the base of the 10-20 m high calcarenite bluffs for 300 m. It is fronted by intertidal calcarenite platform of varying width, with some open sandy patches. Waves are usually less than 1 m at the shore.However out on the reef wave refracting round and peaking on the reef produce the world famous main break (variously known as Surfers Point/Main Break and Margaret River, which hold lefts up to several metres, and a shorter righthanders known as South Side, which works up to 2 m.
Margaret River beach is (WA 660) the more popular swimming beach and is relatively safe under normal conditions. However watch the rip against the southern rocks, and the shorebreak when waves exceed 1 m Gnarabup Beach (WA 658) usually has low waves lapping against the steep beach.
Margaret River produces one of the world’s great lefts on the inner and outer reef, the outer reef holding waves to several metres high. During average swell conditions there is also a shorter right across the inner reef. The river mouth beach can also produces a dumpy shore break.Read less
